Jimmy Wales, co-founder of the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, is attempting to tackle disinformative media content with his online news portal called Wikitribune. The initiative presented on 25 April should be an open platform with content created both by volunteers (who would deal mainly with article editing, fact-checking and suggesting new topics to cover) and professional reporters, who will be regularly paid via crowd-funding. The covered topics should encompass traditional areas such as international politics, as well as science, technology, and subscriber-driven special issues. Wikitribune, declared to be as transparent as possible in all relevant aspects, is planned to utilise the potential of a wide, equally positioned community consisting of seasoned experts and active supporters.

Initiatives focused on the mitigation of the impact of false news are being founded on private basis, national and international level. Some of the examples are the French project CrossCheck, the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats established by joint efforts of NATO and the EU, or the Czech Centre Against Terrorism and Hybrid Threats.
