US exports coal to Ukraine

At the beginning of the month, the United States and Ukraine signed a contract to supply approximately 700,000 tons of coal to Ukraine by the end of the year as a move to reduce Ukraine's dependence on Russian resources.

The first shipment of US coal will arrive in Ukraine in early September. Ukraine is in an unenviable position in terms of energy security. The richest mineral resource regions are in the east of the country, where a conflict between the separatists and the Ukrainian army is taking place. After the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Ukraine will also virtually lose its main natural gas supply and the benefits of being a transit country, which the EU has promised to guarantee to a certain extent. Ukraine is also striving for greater independence from Russia on the political field - it recently declared it is in negotiations with NATO on possible accession. This move is likely to exacerbate the relations between Ukraine and Russia, which will be reflected in relations as well as in other sectors such as energy, and Ukraine will welcome coal reserves before the winter.
