According to an internal evaluation of the 173rd Airborne Brigade published on 3 September, US rapid reaction forces in Europe are currently under-equipped and inadequately organized to prevent possible Russian aggression.

According to an internal report by the 173rd Airborne Brigade, currently operating in Italy mainly due to Russian activities in Crimea and the upcoming military exercise Zapad 2017, the unit lacks the basic capabilities to efficiently and quickly fulfill its tasks. The report highlights, in particular, the lack of technological equipment, as the US Army in Europe lacks anti-aircraft defence technology, and over-reliance on satellite and navigation GPS systems. This is a direct consequence of the unit's long-term operation in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the enemy did not have access to the technology, know-how and did not have air or naval forces, which Russia does have. However, the report also has added value, showing the weaknesses of NATO forces that need to be tackled operationally, so that the Alliance is capable of ensuring security to its members.
