US allies in Asia are anxious and distrustful

On Monday, May 8, U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift informed of the missing confidence in US support and the further concerns of US allies in Asia in the matter of security in the region.

The worries are mainly due to the current tensions with North Korea and the disputes in the South China Sea, which is almost all claimed by China. Beijing is building artificial islands in the area and expanding its military equipment, as the latest satellite imagery suggests. There are no convincing steps against this development made by the US. Although Barrack Obama's administration carried out maritime patrols to ensure freedom of navigation, no such patrols have taken place yet under the current government of Donald Trump, which doesn't want to irritate China, a key actor in the North Korea crisis that hopes to resolve the conflict through diplomacy. Reassuring its allies while not endangering cooperation with China will continue to be a difficult task for the US.
