Trump does not want to get involved in Libya

The US does not want to play any role in Libya apart from defeating Islamic State militants, US president Donald Trump said on 20 April. Trump made his statement during a White House joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Trump’s Italian counterpart, however, perceives the role of the US in Libya as very critical and stressed that the future goal of the West must be political. Stability of Libya is an important factor for Italy in the matter of migration, nevertheless, Italian diplomats are also concerned with rising Russia’s involvement in the North African state, which can strengthen Moscow's influence in the region. However, just as in Syria, Donald Trump act be reactionary and quickly shift from his counter-terrorism emphasis to prioritise other security and political aspects in Libya.
