On 17 May, the government of Slovakia approved the acquisition of armoured personnel carriers for a total amount of 1,2 billion euros. According to the document approved by the government, 81 eight-wheeled defence armoured vehicles and 404 multi-purpose four-wheeled armoured vehicles are planned to be purchased between 2018 and 2029.

The biggest defence modernization project in the country's history is being prepared to replace outdated models made in former Czechoslovakia. However, how the armoured personnel carriers will be procured has not yet been decided. It should be revealed by the end of the year, and according to Defense Minister Peter Gajdoš, the ministry will try to use the capacities of the Slovak defence industry. The prepared deal fits into the trend of increasing military spending in a number of European countries, also demanded by the US as the country stressed that NATO countries have to reach the pledged 2 % GDP defence budget until the end of 2017. Slovakia approved changes to its white paper last year and expects an increase in the defence budget from 1,16 % of GDP to 1,6 % by 2020. As a part of this increase, Slovakia's government also approved plans to send soldiers to Latvia and Iraq this week.
