Qatar and UK intensify their cooperation on countering terrorism

On Saturday 12 August, a three-week joint exercise between the Qatari Ahmed Bin Mohammed Military Academy and the British Armed Forces, held in Wales to train Qatari cadets, was completed. This is the third joint exercise in the last month, their overall goal is to support Qatar's efforts to fight terrorism and maintain security and stability in the Middle East.

However, accusations against Doha of supporting terrorism have resulted in the suspension of diplomatic relations and the imposition of economic embargoes by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt. Qatar plays an important role in the Global Coalition against the Islamic State (IS), where the EU is participating as a non-military partner, and which, in cooperation with countries in the region, developed projects on countering radicalization and improvement of local security. The EU, together with the UK and France, supports Kuwait as a mediator of the regional dispute. In this context, the EU is pushing for direct political action leading to a swift resolution of the crisis, and focus on a common fight against the IS, as confirmed by EU High Representative Federica Morherini after her meeting with the Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al Sabah.
