On Thursday 20 April, North Korea warned of a preemptive attack against the US and its allies in the region. The current strained relations between the two countries are thus further escalating.

Concerns about the North Korean threat rose after the celebrations of the Communist regime founder, Kim Il-sung’s, anniversary, during which a presumed new type of rocket was presented, and another ballistic test was conducted. The US stated it is ready to use all available means to achieve nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula and, together with Japan, force China to play a proactive role in conflict resolution. The Trump’s administration, however, now lost its credibility after it turned out that a strike group preventively sent to the shores of the DPRK actually took part in an exercise in the Indian Ocean and hasn’t moved towards North Korea until now. Although the US has not ruled out the use of force, it is expected to focus on tougher economic sanctions for now, such as an embargo on oil and detaining North Korean cargo ships.
