EU's Political and Security Committee schedules extraordinary meeting on North Korea

An extraordinary meeting of the EU's Political and Security Committee, which will address the current escalation of the North Korean crisis, was called by EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini on Friday and will take place on 14 August.

The tension between the US and North Korea (DPRK) has risen after the DPRK announced on 9 August the preparation of ballistic missile test targeting surroundings of the Pacific island Guam, an autonomous territory of the US where a strategic military base is situated. Trump warned Pyongyang that the United States is fully prepared to launch a military solution if necessary. DPRK's state media stated that the plan will be finalized by mid-August and sent for approval to DPRK leader Kim Jong-un. The test should include four Hwasong-12 ballistic missiles which will hit surroundings 30-40 km away from Guam. Some security experts consider the revelation of such detailed plan a further demonstration of strength following DPRK's test of an intercontinental ballistic missile on 28 July or a reaction to the adoption of tough sanction drafted by the US. The Pentagon prepared a plan of a preemptive strike on DPRK's missile sites which is risky and could lead to an attack on South Korea.
