Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron a possible purchase of French fighter aircraft Rafale during his visit to France on 23-25 October. In addition, both statesmen discussed the situation in Libya, the fight against terrorism and migration issues.

Following the inauguration of General Sisi as President, France has seen a significant improvement in relations with Egypt and a widening of military and economic cooperation. Egypt already bought 24 aircraft of this type from France, several multi-purpose frigates and two Mistral warships. The enlargement of Egypt‘s military capabilities is necessary due to the volatile situation Sinai peninsula, neighbouring Libya and the fight against terrorism. Egypt has seen an increase in militant activity in recent days. Clashes between the military and Islamists resulted in 13 militant deaths in the New Valley Governorate on 27 October.
