On Thursday 31 August, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias met with Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov, President Gjorge Ivanov and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev in order to identify plans and preparations for further talks about usage of the name Macedonia.

Macedonia has been actively striving to improve relations with neighboring countries in recent months, for example, signed a treaty on mutual friendship with Bulgaria on 1 August . At a meeting in Skopje, Macedonian and Greek officials agreed on closer cooperation on economic and security issues. Greece would welcome another member of NATO and the EU in the region that is also of interest to Russia and deepen mutual integration but first of all wants to resolve the long-time disputes. Macedonia's goal is to become a part of the Western world as soon as possible, thus limiting Russia's influence in the region. Matthew Nimetz, the designated UN overseer over the name dispute, proposes that this issue be resolved from November to January.
