On 18 March, the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by General Khalifa Haftar, finally captured Benghazi's Ganfouda apartment complex from Islamist militias, marking the end of the operation “Dignity” launched in May 2014. Haftar’s troops have been accused of committing crimes against the civilians trapped in the area.

For several months militants have resisted in northern neighbourhoods of the second largest Libyan city. The victory came after Haftar's forces regained control of key oil ports Ras Lanuf and Es Sider on 14 March as the Benghazi Defences Brigades (BDB) initially overrun the facilities at the beginning of March. Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) has expressed optimism after the LNA to regained the control of the facilities.
