On Sunday 23 April a joint US and Japanese naval drill started south of the Korean Peninsula, joined by a US strike group previously sent to North Korea. DPRK has threatened an aggressive response.

Tense relations with Pyongyang escalated with its latest missile tests and threats and have already prompted the reaction of Beijing, which appealed for restraint and a peaceful solution to the conflict. Russia began moving heavy machinery to the North Korean border on Thursday 20 April, following Beijing’s military manoeuvres from last week, and South Korean armed forces are on high alert. The probability of more instability is rising again with the upcoming 85th anniversary of the establishment of the North Korean People's Army, which may include another nuclear or ballistic test. The detention of a US citizen by the DPRK further escalates the tensions but might signal an attempt to solve the conflict diplomatically as US diplomats might pay Pyongyang a visit.
