On 27 March Italy approved the construction of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which is a part of the Southern Gas Corridor. The decision triggered a wave of protests in Puglia region.

The planned Southern Gas Corridor will supply natural gas to the EU. The project has strategic importance for both Azerbaijan and Turkey. It is practically the first project to deliver natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe while also strengthening the role of Turkey as a regional energy hub. The project aims mainly at southern and south-eastern Europe with weak and insufficient energy infrastructure. In addition to enhancing the security of supply in these countries, the aim of the EU is to diversify the market of contractors and reduce the dependence on Russian gas.
