Romania will buy 272 new armoured personnel carriers in a deal with German company Rheinmetall Defence, the deal was discussed during a conference in Bucharest on 7 March. The acquisition contract is to be signed this summer.

Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence approved the contract to build 600 8×8 Boxer carriers. The deal was first approved in November 2016 by the previous government headed by former European Commissioner Dacian Cioloș, on the condition that Rheinmetall constructs the vehicles in Romania and that both parties will share 50% of the new Romanian Military Vehicle Systems company. This is just the first step, as the Romanian Land Forces need about 600 vehicles. Romanian defence industry will contribute about 40% to the programme before its participation increases up to 60%. The decision comes against the background of calls for NATO countries to raise defence spending to 2% of GDP and the EU's greater eagerness for common defence projects.
