Massive shelling by pro-Russian separatists has been reported since 20 March in the Eastern Ukraine. In two days, around 50 attacks have been reported, two soldiers died and at least eight people were injured. The attacks were carried out with heavy artillery, mortars, grenade launchers and tanks. The majority of ceasefire violations were reported near the port city of Mariupol and in smaller cities near Donetsk and Avdiivka.

The rapid intensification of fighting could be related to the recent economic blockade imposed by Ukraine that will likely deprive separatist leaders of considerable finances coming from coal transfer, but also from smuggling fuel, cigarettes and groceries. The blockade will probably have a large impact on employment in occupied territories, especially in sectors dependent on coal transfer. Nearly 300 thousand of people could lose their jobs.
