On Tuesday 17 October, the US Department of State has decided to support a potential Foreign Military Sale of a modernisation package for 123 Greek F-16 jets. The estimated purchase value is $ 2,404 billion.

The Hellenic Air Force consists of more than 150 F-16s and should upgrade these multipurpose aircraft to their modernised F-16V version thanks to the possible package. Lockheed Martin is a potential contractor. According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the modernisation would enhance Greece's defence including its capabilities to carry out counterterrorism operations and improve its deterrent potential in relation to regional threats. In general, this configuration will contribute to greater interoperability within NATO, where Greece is one of the few countries that has been exceeding the required 2 % of GDP threshold for a long time. This modernisation project is all the more important after the fiscal crisis shrunk Greece's GDP by 45 % between 2008 and 2015 which had a significant negative impact on the military. Nevertheless, the Greek armed forces continue to be one of the best funded and equipped armies in Europe.
