The German Bundeswehr will reinforce its armoured vehicles with a contract worth of 760 million euros, awarded to German arms manufacturer Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, to deliver 328 tanks by 2023.

The Bundeswehr will receive 104 used Leopard 2 tanks that will be upgraded to the latest A7V version. The first batch will be shipped in 2019. According to the German Defense Ministry, the step is a reaction to geopolitical developments of the past years that are also reflected by other NATO countries, who are likewise expanding their armed forces and reinforcing their military presence on the eastern wing of the North Atlantic Alliance. This is mainly due to the activities of Russia and its increasingly deteriorating relations with NATO. Efforts to strengthen tank capabilities are also carried out by other NATO countries amid the growing importance of armoured vehicles.
