Gazprom begins to use full capacity of Opal gas pipeline

Gazprom announced on 9 August that it is using the full capacity of the Opal gas pipeline after a German court abolished all restrictions on the use of the pipeline last month. Poland filed a complaint against the full use of Opal by Gazprom last December, German courts rejected the complaint because there was no reason to restrict the business of a Russian company in Germany.

Poland has long been an opponent of Russian activities in the energy sector of Central Europe, in addition to this complaint, Poland has a negative stance on the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The main reasons are the increasing dominance of Russian gas at markets in Central and Eastern Europe and increasing dependence on Russia. Despite the sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU for the conflict in Ukraine, one-third of Europe’s gas supply is covered by Russia, and in the near future, despite the EU's efforts to diversify, this is unlikely to change. The recently imposed US sanctions on Russia are also controversial since they are targeting Nord Stream 2 and are seen by the EU as a tool of US economic interests for supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe.
