The French Naval Group and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri are withdrawing from a German tender for MKS-180 warships, Naval Group Chairman Hervé Guillau said on Thursday 28 September. This is another signal of the development of mutual security cooperation .

One of the major common goals reflecting these companies’ developing partnership is the plan to create a flagship of the European naval alliance. On 27 September in Lyon, Paris and Rome agreed on the creation of an alliance in the naval defence sector, which the companies welcomed since both of them will take a part in the formulation of a plan to establish the alliance, which is to be introduced in June 2018. Therefore, it is no surprise that the companies are considering participating in a Canadian tender by launching an offer of their FREMM class frigates and that they want to cooperate in the development of anti-submarine technology. There are also plans to build a new tanker and patrol boats. This partnership should improve France and Italy's competitiveness on the world market, especially in the context of rivalries with China and Russia. The positive development of mutual relations reflects the overcoming of recent bilateral disputes.
