The European Commission will present a new set of measures to strengthening the ability of law enforcement to access of encrypted data used in communication via applications like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal in July, EurActiv reported. Interior ministers of member countries, who are pushing for the measures, justify the increase of powers arguing that perpetrators of terrorist attacks use such services for communication (as was the case of the recent Westminster attack). EurActiv, quoting European Commissioner for Justice and Consumers Věra Jourová, described as possible actions directive legislative as well as voluntary initiatives. The latter should bridge potentially years-long period of legislation approval.

Germany and France, long-term proposers of stricter approach towards encryption using communication platforms, have supported the British position on the matter and appealed to the European Commission to consider treating internet messaging services such as Skype as the standard telephone operators, who have to share data with law enforcement.
