On 9 March EU leaders agreed to engage more intensively with Western Balkans countries that aspire to join the EU and NATO. British Prime Minister Theresa May also added that the UK would host a special summit on the matter of Western Balkans in 2018.

Western Balkan states have faced tensions recently. This includes an ongoing dispute between Kosovo and Serbia, as well as pressures from the migration crisis, uncertain prospect of their EU membership, the rise of a militant Islamism and growing Russia's meddling, which aims to discourage Western Balkan countries from joining the EU and NATO. The European Union plans to display a more generous approach towards the Western Balkans and welcomes their membership in the club once they carry out necessary economic and democratic reforms.
