On Sunday 23 April Danish Secretary of Defence Claus Hjort Frederiksen announced that Denmark has been a victim of Russian hacker attacks trying to gain access to government emails in 2015 and 2016.

Danish intelligence report confirms attacks on government officials, although it doesn’t mention a specific country responsible for them. The Russian Federation has recently been increasingly accused of cyber-attacks on democratic processes in Western countries, for instance being associated with influencing elections in the United States, Great Britain and France. Moscow is also associated with intense cyber activity in Montenegro in order to influence the political direction of the country. The attack on the Danish government was probably conducted by the group APT28 / Fancy Bear, who was the one accessing US Democratic Party emails last year and broke into the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) last month. The current threat of information operations by Russia is also deeply felt in Eastern European countries, who recently turned to the US Senate for help.
