Czech Republic and Jordan to cooperate on peaceful nuclear energy

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka signed an agreement with Jordanian Prime Minister Hani Al-Mulkim on Tuesday 22 August to improve mutual cooperation on nuclear energy development and research, which will allow Czech companies to participate in the construction of nuclear reactors in Jordan.

The agreement of cooperation between the Czech Republic and Jordan on the development of peaceful use of nuclear energy will allow a number of actors to contribute to Jordanian nuclear sector. Czech companies could participate in the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan, which should be operational in 2025, with 49% of this project being owned by Russian Rosatom, according to a 2015 deal. This agreement follows another memorandum signed by the Czech company ÚJV Řež a.s. and the Jordanian Nuclear Energy Commission in 2015 to ensure cooperation on the design, construction and subsequent operation of nuclear power plants and research reactors. This cooperation could, therefore, increase mutual trade, which already increased by 62 % in 2016 compared to the previous year.
