Brexit registration site was probably hit by DDoS attack

A DDoS attack may be the cause of an outage of the registration website for the Brexit referendum, a report of the British Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) said on April 11. The incident took place on June 7, only hours prior to the registration deadline, resulting in its delay. Although the website's collapse is commonly ascribed to the onrush of visitors, the PACAC is not ruling out a DDoS attack as its cause since some traits of this method were recorded. Such attack would correspond with the Russian approach to cyberspace as a mean of psychological influence on public opinion. Foreign interference in elections and referendums via cyberspace is already raising concerns in the UK and other European countries.
