Austrian Foreign ministry hit by Turkish cyberattack

Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Thomas Schnöll on 7 March informed about another attack of Turkish hackers on his office. The DDoS attack, which took down web pages of the institution for several minutes, was attributed to Turkish group Aslan Neferler Tim that has also claimed last cyber attacks on Austria Foreign ministry, Defence ministry and the parliament.

The incident is reportedly linked to the recent ban on Turkish political rallies ahead of Turkey's controversial constitutional referendum aimed at moving the country to the presidential system. The same actors and motivation were also behind the takeover thousands of Twitter accounts, which were defaced by anti-German and anti-Dutch messages on 15 March. The cyber attack represents ongoing tensions between both countries, which is are repeatedly projected into cyberspace.
