According to reports from Monday 9 October, the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) wants Austria to join the anti-immigration policy and approach of the Visegrad Group and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Furthermore, FPO leader Heinz-Christian Strache said in an election debate that the party's goal is to establish stronger relations with the V4 and even become another member of it since Austria has much closer ties to Central Europe than the rest of the EU. The FPO, which also calls for decentralisation within the European Union, could be a part of the next government coalition. In the upcoming elections on Sunday 15 October, the FPO will be fighting for the second place with the Social Democrats (SPO). During the election campaign, the FPO dictated the agenda on immigration and fears of radical Islam. Even the Austrian People's Party (OVP), now leading the election, has gradually taken on similar anti-immigration rhetoric to avoid of losing votes, particularly their leader Sebastian Kurz. Therefore, as a result of the campaigns' direction, the issue of Islamization is often addressed in superficial and populist terms in Austria.
