Interior Ministry spokesman Johannes Dimroth said on 27 February that migrants in Germany faced more than 3,500 attacks in 2015. Nevertheless, he added that the crimes are being aggressively prosecuted and the numbers of such attacks are now falling.

Germany took in 890,000 asylum-seekers in 2015, and this caused a backlash and a rise in anti-immigrant sentiment, especially in eastern parts of Germany. The number of asylum-seekers in Germany decreased to 280,000 in 2016. Due to this and greater efforts to repatriate those whose applications were rejected, anti-immigrant sentiment has diminished. There has also been a greater effort to integrate refugees who are allowed to stay. However, it is expected that the anti-immigrant and nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party will win seats in the parliament for the first time in the national election in September, despite a recent poll showing the party’s support drop to 11 percent from 16 percent in fall 2016.
